The Weißenau Chronicle of the German Peasants’ War of 1525 is Jacob Murer’s eyewitness account of the rebellion around the Premonstratensian abbey of Weißenau in Upper Swabia. Murer, the abbey’s abbot, arranged explanatory German texts around eleven colored double-page pen drawings depicting negotiations, flight, plunder, military confrontation, and the peasants’ eventual submission. Produced in 1525, the chronicle transforms successive events into continuous panoramic scenes and offers an exceptional visual record shaped by the perspective of the affected monastic lordship.
