This collection presents the testaments of Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano, two central figures of the first circumnavigation of the globe. Magellan’s will was written before his departure from Seville in 1519 and records his instructions regarding burial, family inheritance, servants, and the continuation of his lineage in Castile. Elcano’s testament was dictated in 1526 during the Loaísa expedition, while he was dying in the Pacific. Written down by Andrés de Urdaneta, it lists his possessions, debts, books, clothing, provisions, and personal bequests to relatives, companions, and others connected to his life and voyage.
