Created in Nuremberg in 1573, the Album of Franz Joachim Brechtel contains twenty-two examples of ornate calligraphy, most introduced by a large openwork initial with cadelles. The book's scribe was a skilled writing master, mathematician, and musical composer. The album, which displays the scribe's mastery of Gothic and humanistic scripts, is a fascinating example of sixteenth-century penwork, marked by complex interlacing and scrollwork. The palette is often restricted to black ink with gold used for scrollwork and headings.
