Vita Sancti Severini Facsimile Edition

The Vita Sancti Severini now kept in Vienna as Cod. 1064 survives not as a standalone volume but as one text within a twelfth-century Latin Sammelhandschrift, a composite manuscript that once belonged to the Cathedral Chapter Library of Salzburg, where it carried the earlier shelfmark Sal. 225. The codex testifies to the circulation of learned and devotional books across medieval ecclesiastical centers, where texts from earlier Christian tradition were copied, reorganized, and preserved for renewed study.

A Salzburg Book of Many Texts

Cod. 1064 is a theological miscellany rather than a single-work codex: across its 103 parchment leaves it gathers hagiography, an epistolary tract, and canon-law material. The Vita Sancti Severini occupies folios 61r–80r, opening with the two dedicatory letters between Eugippius and the deacon Paschasius; it is followed on folio 80v by a short epistolary tract, de tractatione quorundam obsidum, and then on folios 81r–95r by a set of legal cases (Casus ex iure), the section laid out in two columns. Further theological texts fill the opening portion of the book.

The manuscript is also known to scholarship as a glossed codex, preserving eleven Old High German interlinear glosses that explain geographical names within the Vita itself.

Script, Structure, and Decoration

The script is a Carolingian minuscule executed by a single twelfth-century hand, a controlled and legible book hand suited to reading and consultation. Its decoration is restrained but purposeful: numerous simple initials mark textual divisions, while two large foliate, tendril-ornamented initials (fols. 18r, 62v) lend emphasis to major openings, the latter falling within the Vita itself. The visual language favors clarity over spectacle, revealing a book shaped for intellectual use as much as devotional memory.

The Presence of Saint Severin

Within this broader codex, the Vita Sancti Severini preserves the memory of Severin of Noricum (d. 482), the ascetic and missionary of the Upper Danube frontier. Composed by Eugippius, third abbot of Severin's community and writing around 511 at the Castellum Lucullanum near Naples, the text gave medieval readers a model of sanctity formed in crisis: prophetic, pastoral, and deeply attentive to communities living at the edge of political transformation in the twilight of Roman Noricum.

It also remains a rare and valuable historical source for Central Europe at the passage from antiquity to the early Middle Ages. In Cod. 1064, that memory entered a new manuscript setting, where a late antique saint continued to speak to the twelfth century.
