The Thierbuch is the first German adaptation of Conrad Gessner's great zoological encyclopedia, printed by Christoph Froschauer in Zurich in 1563. Conrad Forer translated and abridged Gessner's Latin treatment of viviparous quadrupeds for a broader German-speaking readership. Organized around individual animals, the book combines inherited learning, practical and medical information, and observations of the natural world. Its numerous woodcuts make animals central to the reader's encounter with the text and exemplify the important role of printed images in Renaissance natural history.
