Among the most revered autographs in Western music, Bach’s Six Solos for Violin without Accompanied Bass stands as a defining testament to the expressive and structural potential of the unaccompanied violin. Composed in 1720, during Bach’s tenure in Köthen, the collection comprises three Sonatas and three Partitas, alternating in sequence. The title page—written in Bach’s own hand—declares both its Italianate ambition and its independence from continuo practice.

Autograph and Transmission

The Berlin manuscript, Mus.ms. Bach P 967, is widely recognized as a carefully prepared fair copy by Johann Sebastian Bach himself. The manuscript was acquired by the Königliche Bibliothek in 1917 from the estate of Wilhelm Rust and had earlier belonged to the Bückeburg branch of the Bach family. Already in the late nineteenth century it was praised as a magnificent achievement in calligraphy, reflecting Bach’s meticulous layout and spatial balance.

The manuscript bears the designation Libro Primo, suggesting a companion volume; scholars associate this with the Six Suites for Violoncello, though the corresponding autograph has not survived.

Structure and Musical Vision

Each Sonata follows the four-movement sonata da chiesa model, culminating in expansive fugues of architectural daring. The Partitas, by contrast, unfold as dance suites, reaching a spiritual summit in the monumental Chaconne of the D minor Partita—a movement whose variations explore polyphony and harmonic illusion on a single melodic instrument.

Legacy

Preserved through war and displacement, the autograph today remains one of the Staatsbibliothek’s most treasured holdings. Beyond its historical value, it offers performers direct insight into Bach’s notation, articulation, and compositional intent—an enduring bridge between composer and interpreter.
