Caspar Stromayr’s Practica Copiosa is an extensively illustrated German surgical manuscript begun at Lindau in 1559. Its principal treatise describes hernias, surgical instruments, operative procedures, postoperative care, and complications, while an unfinished ophthalmological section discusses the eye and cataract surgery. The manuscript’s numerous colored illustrations document the practical techniques, clothing, equipment, and clinical culture of a sixteenth-century surgeon. Acquired by the city of Lindau in 1577, the work survives in a binding that reportedly disrupted the original order of its component texts.
