The Munich Theuerdank is a copy of the first, limited edition of a fictionalized verse account of the youthful adventures of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. The printing in Nuremberg in 1517 by Johann Schönsperger (the Elder), as well as the composition of the poem and the creation of its woodcut illustrations, was patronized by the emperor. The typeface was originally designed for Maximilian for a limited-edition prayer book. The 118 woodcuts depict Theuerdank facing and overcoming a wide range of obstacles. Those in the Munich copy are expertly hand-colored.
We have 1 facsimile edition of the manuscript "Munich Theuerdank": Theuerdank of 1517 facsimile edition, published by Taschen, 2003
