Mariner's Mirror is the German edition of Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer's pioneering printed sea atlas, published by Cornelis Claesz in Amsterdam in 1589. Translated and expanded by Richard Slotboom, its two parts combine practical sailing directions and navigational instruction with forty-seven engraved charts of the Atlantic, North Sea, and Baltic coasts of Europe. Waghenaer's systematic pairing of coastal charts with profiles, soundings, landmarks, and hazards transformed the traditional pilot book and helped establish a new model for printed nautical atlases used by European mariners.
