Dating from the seventh century, the Leonine Sacramentary is the earliest surviving manuscript of prayers of the Christian Latin Mass, the sacrament in which consecrated bread and wine are consumed. Despite the manuscript's nickname, Pope Leo I probably did not compose its prayers, nor is it a sacramentary (i.e. a book comprising all the prayers said by the celebrating priest at Mass). It is rather a heterogeneous collection of libelli ("booklets") of prayers reflecting the liturgy of Rome, although the manuscript was probably created outside the city.
