The Lawbook of the City of Herford is a parchment manuscript of municipal law produced probably in Herford in 1368-1376. Written in Middle Low German, its sixty-one articles draw in part on the Sachsenspiegel and record the legal principles governing the city's community. Two imposing full-page miniatures, later bound at the front, visualize civic concord and the administration of justice. The manuscript's carefully executed initials, pen-flourishing, and painted imagery make it an exceptional witness to late medieval urban legal culture.
