A highly important travel book of the Bolonian (there are conjectures about his origin and date of birth, towards 1465-1470) Lodovico Barthema or Varthema (he is cited both ways), who leaving Venice carried out an impressing voyage, of which he offers us a detailed and attractive description.

He spent his last year of life in Rome, where he died in 1517.

This work is on many occasions the oldest testimonial available on some of these regions. It is said in the book description that "Argumento de la obra" que "mouido con zelo y amor de ver con los ojos: lo que algunas vezes leia en Ptolomeo, Strabo, Plinio y en otros que de cosmographia e geographia scriuieron: determino encomendar su anima a Dios: y el cuerpo a los trabajos e variedad de fortuna: y dar una buelta a la mayor parte de la Asia e Africa: solamente aquellas cosas desseando ver que a nosotros eran ocultas".

It's worth mentioning the name of the translator of this work, Cristóbal de Arcos, who was the chaplain of the Sevillian archbishop Diego de Deza.

Apart from this work, we also know of other translations by him of the works of  Jacome Fontano La muy lamentable conquista y cruenta batalla de Rhodas (The very regrettable conquest and cruel battle of Rhoedes with several editions) and from Agostino Nifo Reprobación nuevamente ordenada contra la falsa prognosticación del diluvio que dizen que será el año de MDXXIIII por el ayuntamiento y conjunción de todos los planetas en el signo de Piscis.

International social justice movements and the debates that ensued prompted us to start considering the contents of our website from a critical point of view. This has led us to acknowledge that most of the texts in our database are Western-centered. We have asked the authors of our content to be aware of the underlying racial and cultural bias in many scholarly sources, and to try to keep in mind multiple points of view while describing the manuscripts. We also recognize that this is yet a small, first step towards fighting inequality.

If you notice any trace of racist or unjust narratives in our communications, please help us be part of the change by letting us know.
