The Gospel Book of the Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna survives as an imposing fragment of an Armenian Gospel manuscript created around the year 1000. Its eight preserved parchment leaves retain brilliantly colored illuminations despite the loss of the text. The surviving cycle includes canon tables, sanctuary imagery, the Sacrifice of Isaac with the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Baptism of Christ, the Crucifixion, and portraits of the Four Evangelists. Architectural arcades evoke early Christian sacred spaces, transforming the opening of the Gospels into a visual passage from the earthly world toward the holy text itself.
