The Stuttgart Theuerdank is a copy of the very limited first edition of a German-language epic poem relating the exploits of the young knight Theuerdank (a fictionalized version of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor). It was printed in Nuremberg in 1517 by Johann Schönsperger (the Elder). The composition and illustration of the poem, as well as its printing, were patronized by the emperor, who employed Leonhard Beck, Hans Burgkmaier (the Elder), and Hans Schäufelein (the Elder)—among others—to design its 118 woodcut illustrations, each filling two-thirds of a page.
