Now housed in Spain's Archivo Histórico Nacional, the El Cid Documents relate to the life of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar. Díaz de Vivar, also known as The Cid (an Arabic honorific meaning "lord"), was a knight, ruler, and a Spanish national hero and cultural icon widely represented in literature. The collection includes originals, copies, and forgeries dating from the Cid's lifetime and after. One document records a donation made by El Cid and his wife, Jimina, to the Benedictine monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos.
The collection includes the following documents:
- Clero, carp. 271, nº 6-7-8 (August 26, 1070): King Sancho II ordered that his body be buried at San Salvador de Oña. He granted Abbot Ovidio permission to build churches on his estates, exempted his properties from taxes, and bestowed upon him the Church of Santa Cruz in Moriana. Rodrigo Díaz confirmed the charter.
- Clero, carp. 1647, nº 2-3 (January–February 1075, León): King Alfonso VI donated the monastery of Santa Eugenia de Cordovilla, along with its behetría lands in Aguilar, to Rodrigo Díaz and his relative, Abbot Lecenio, son of Sancha Bermúdez.
- Clero, carp. 375, nº 1 (May 12, 1076): Rodrigo Díaz and his wife Jimena donated half of the villages of Peñacoba and Frescinosa to the Monastery of Silos.
- Clero, carp. 884, nº 14-15 (May 8, 1080): Alfonso VI confirmed to Bernardo, Abbot of Sahagún, all the privileges and exemptions that had been granted to his predecessor. He decreed that no royal official could enter the monastery’s lands to collect taxes or levies. Rodrigo Díaz confirmed the charter.
- Códices y cartularios, 996 B, fols. 53-54 (March 11, 1088): Alfonso VI donated the Monastery of San Servando, located at the gates of Toledo, to St. Peter of Rome, so that it could be held by the abbots of Saint Victor of Marseille. He also included the village of Azuqueca, an almunia previously owned by the Moor Alfalif, and a watermill. Rodrigo Díaz confirmed the charter.
- Códices y cartularios, 994 B, fol. 63r (October 2, 1213): García Petrez sold a vineyard in Villahernando, formerly owned by El Cid, to Gonzalo, the Abbot of Santa María de Aguilar.
