The chef-d'oeuvre of the great Italian antiquary and collector Francesco Ficoroni (1664-1747), which is of huge importance for the history of theatre. Its pages bring to life the fascinating tradition of the Greek-Roman theatre and document the origin of the interpretation and adaptation of masks for the theatre. Beyond their use in the theatre, masks played a prominent role in the liturgy and the funeral art of the Romans, representing the tragic character of fate.
