The Madrid Cosmographia is an early edition of the Latin translation of the Geography by the ancient Greco-Roman astronomer and geographer Ptolemy. Published in 1486 in Ulm by Johann Reger, it enhances the 1482 edition by the addition of an alphabetical register of places and peoples and a text, based on medieval sources, on the "places and marvels of world." Five modern maps amplify Ptolomy' maps. The copy BH Inc. Fl-5 is one of two copies in the Biblioteca Histórica in Madrid. It boasts thirty-two hand-colored woodcut maps and dozens of hand-painted woodcut decorated initials.

  • Full-size color reproduction of the entire original document, Cosmographia: the facsimile attempts to replicate the look-and-feel and physical features of the original document; pages are trimmed according to the original format; the binding might not be consistent with the current document binding.

The edition is based on an incunabulum from the Historical Library of the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, chosen for its excellent craftsmanship and preservation. To better match the original, several pages were replaced: the first printed page, which was irreparably damaged, is shown as found; pages A2, A3, and A4, as well as the "Prima Europe" page and the last printed page with the printer’s seal, were sourced from another incunabulum at the Royal Academy of History in Madrid. Additionally, the initial capital of the page starting with "Seconda Europe" was taken from a different incunabulum at the Universidad Complutense.
