The Trivulziano Codex 2159, currently housed in the Trivulziana library, was presented as a gift to King Francis I of France in 1518 by its creator, painter Giorgio Ambrogio Noceto. This volume was designed to showcase the beauty of Milanese women. The codex begins with the king's portrait, followed by 27 depictions of women from elite Milanese and Lombard families, each selected for either their striking physical features or their elaborate, luxurious clothing. The opening sequence features seven portraits of women dressed in widow's veils, symbolically representing the seven virtues. Each watercolor portrait is uniquely displayed within a circular, openable frame that sits at the center of its page. The manuscript eventually found its way into the Trivulziana collection after being purchased by Marquis Gian Giacomo Trivulzio from an unknown Parisian bookseller.
