Codex Escorial Chansonnier Facsimile Edition

The Codex Escorial Chansonnier is an exceptional collection of secular polyphony produced around 1430–1445 for the Burgundian court of Philip the Good. Preserved today in the Real Biblioteca del Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the manuscript gathers the refined musical language of one of fifteenth-century Europe’s most influential courts, where poetry, ceremony, and song shaped aristocratic identity.

A Repertory of Courtly Song

The parchment codex contains sixty-three compositions, predominantly French chansons for two, three, or four voices. Its repertory includes works by leading composers such as Gilles Binchois, Guillaume Du Fay, John Dunstaple, and Jacobus Vide, alongside a substantial group of anonymous pieces. Themes of love, separation, longing, and fidelity unfold through rondeaux, ballades, and other courtly forms.

Music Across the Opening

The manuscript’s unusual page design transforms reading into a physical performance. Each opening must be turned sideways: the discantus appears lengthwise on the verso, while the tenor and contratenor occupy the facing recto. This arrangement allowed singers to gather around the open book and follow their individual parts within a shared visual field.

Scribes, Notation, and Color

Two scribes copied the repertory in black mensural notation, using red coloration and red musical staves to clarify rhythm and structure. Initials ornamented in black, red, and blue provide restrained visual accents, reflecting a volume conceived primarily for musical use rather than lavish display.

A Court Preserved in Sound

More than a songbook, the chansonnier preserves the emotional vocabulary of Burgundian court culture. Its carefully ordered voices evoke an environment in which music served memory, ceremony, and intimate expression, allowing the distant soundscape of the fifteenth century to remain legible today.
