Bredius-Kronig Sketchbook of Jan van Goyen Facsimile Edition

The Bredius-Kronig Sketchbook preserves the quick, searching vision of Jan van Goyen, one of the defining landscape artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Begun on May 15, 1644, this compact album accompanied the painter through the provinces of North and South Holland, recording buildings, river villages, dunes, waterways, and distant horizons. Its modest scale reveals its purpose: this was a portable workshop, made for observation in motion.

Landscape in the Dutch Republic

Van Goyen belonged to a generation that transformed landscape from a setting for narrative into an independent subject. Low horizons, open skies, and the level geography of the Netherlands became expressions of place and identity. His travels supplied an expanding visual archive from which he later developed paintings and finished drawings for the art market.

Drawing as Visual Memory

Executed chiefly in black chalk, the sketches reduce architecture and terrain to essential lines. Roofs, towers, boats, trees, and embankments emerge through swift contours rather than elaborate finish. A later hand added brownish-red wash to portions of the album, altering its original appearance without obscuring Van Goyen’s remarkably economical draftsmanship.

Observation Transformed

These sheets were not necessarily designs for exact topographical views. In the studio, Van Goyen recombined remembered and recorded motifs into imagined yet convincing landscapes. The sketchbook therefore stands between documentation and invention: a reservoir of forms through which lived experience became art.

More intimate than a completed painting, the album allows the viewer to follow the artist’s attention as it moves across the Dutch countryside. Each abbreviated mark testifies to an eye trained to recognize atmosphere, structure, and possibility in the passing world.
