The manuscript lat. 7939A in the Bibliothèque nationale de France was crafted in Ferrara, Italy, in 1458-1459 and includes a selection of Vergilian works, namely the Bucolicon, Georgicon, Aeneid, Appendix, and Donatus auctus. The codex, written on parchment and made up of 231 folios, bears the signature, together with the indication of the date and place of compilation, of Leonardo Sanudo, a Venetian nobleman active at that time at the Estense court. Sanudo was not only the copyist but probably also the commissioner and owner of the manuscript. Guglielmo Giraldi and Giorgio d’Alemagna, two prominent figures of figurative art in Ferrara, were responsible for the beautiful decorative apparatus.
