The History of the Indies was begun in 1527 by the Spanish Dominican friar Bartolomé de las Casas during his abbacy of the Convent of Puerto de Plata in the Dominican Republic. It was completed in 1561 while he was working at the Colegio de San Gregorio. Primarily an eye-witness account, it chronicles the Spanish colonization of the West Indies in three volumes, each focusing on a decade from Christopher Columbus's arrival in 1492 to 1520. It notably includes Casas's apology for his earlier advocacy of the enslavement of Africans.
