A testament to a new exciting era
The Genoese Francesco Ghisolfo created these nautical atlantes right after the discovery of the New World in a moment of great excitement due to a revolution that was changing not only the fields of geography, astronomy, and cartography but also economy and commerce. He took inspiration from the nautical atlantes of the Venetian Battista Agnese who, in his workshop coordinated the production of about seventy atlantes. The atlases are a precious testament of the new era and have great artistic value: the abundance of ornaments and the watercolor drawings are a result of the influence that remarkable painters such as Andrea del Sarto and Pontormo had.
We have 1 facsimile edition of the manuscript "Francesco Ghisolfo Nautical Atlas": Gli Atlanti Nautici di Francesco Ghisolfo facsimile edition, published by Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, 2008
