The Brussels Book of Simple Medicines is a French herbal in prose. It was likely made in northern France around 1460-1470 with the intention to be used rigorously for its medical information by doctors and apothecaries. Its text was adapted from Matthaeus Platearius's Latin-language Circa instans, which is one of the major sources of medical knowledge of the Middle Ages. Its 461 ink-and-wash miniatures of plants, trees, flowers, animals, and minerals are distinguished for the high quality of their representations.
