It’s\u00a0Halloween again!<\/p>\n

Last year – remember? – we created the very first illuminated pumpkin<\/strong><\/a> you\u2019ve ever seen: medievalists went crazy for it and it ended up in a museum<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

And once again, we have a little something for you…<\/p>\n

How to create your carved pumpkin<\/h2>\n

First, you\u2019ll need some stuff to get ready:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. A large pumpkin<\/li>\n
  2. The usual super-sharp knife and a large spoon<\/li>\n
  3. Safety glasses<\/li>\n
  4. A dremel tool<\/li>\n
  5. Groggy (what!?)<\/li>\n
  6. The stencil of the picture you want to carve: we printed our lovely Little Owl<\/strong> on a A4 paper (approx. 21 x 30 cm) + tape<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Some useful tools to carve an awesome pumpkin: don’t forget the goggles!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

    A welcome addition to all this might have been a dust sheet<\/strong> to cover the table we\u2019ve worked on. We didn\u2019t get it and we SO regret it<\/strong>: pumpkin pulp is very sticky and it took a while to clean the surrounding – walls included! – once we were done.<\/p>\n

    Let\u2019s start!<\/h2>\n

    First, make sure to kill the pumpkin<\/strong>. Push the knife through the top, close to the stem, and cut a hole to get access to the internal part. If you keep the blade with an angle, it\u2019ll be easier to refit the \u201chat\u201d later.<\/p>\n

    Step 1: cutting off the top<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

    Once you get access to the content, use the spoon to scrape the inner part of the pumpkin<\/strong> and empty it. To be honest, we\u2019re not really sure of the reason for this step: a chiseled pumpkin is not see-through<\/strong>! Anyway, every tutorial out there suggests it, so don\u2019t ask questions and follow the rules!<\/p>\n

    Step 2: emptying the pumpkin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

    Now, take your stencil<\/strong> and carefully tape it to the pumpkin on the side that you feel more appropriate.<\/p>\n

    Step 3: carefully tape the stencil on the pumpkin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

    When done, use a very pointy thing (either a knife or some tool… We used Groggy<\/a>) to mark the outline of your stencil<\/strong>. Make small holes all along the lines BUT don\u2019t push too much<\/strong>. You don\u2019t want to cut through the wall of the pumpkin: you just need to replicate the design on the surface<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Step 4: mark the outline and get ready to carve!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

    This is how your pumpkin will look, ready to be dremelized<\/strong>. For those who don\u2019t know, a dremel is a rotary tool that comes with a number of accessories. Among them, it\u2019s the engraver\/cutter tool, that happens to be perfect for messing around with pumpkins! Start with following the lines<\/strong> and peel off the outer skin. Don\u2019t push too much!<\/p>\n

    At this point you should be wearing your goggles<\/strong>: if you don\u2019t, you\u2019re probably rushing to the closest hospital to get your eyes cleaned, and we\u2019ll wait patiently here until you\u2019re back, with your glasses ON.<\/p>\n

    Now it\u2019s time to pick the areas to be carved and decide the depth.<\/p>\n

    Step 5: carve your design using the dremel tool<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

    In our case, pupils, beak and wings<\/strong> are very deeply carved (leaving just a thing layer of pulp), the monocle and the lower part of the body<\/strong> are halfway and the outlines are just scraped. Both eyeballs and the main body<\/strong> are left untouched. To work properly, you might want to have a light inside the pumpkin and low lights around you.<\/p>\n

    At this point, we\u2019ve decided to install the illuminating system<\/strong>, so we opened a hole on the opposite side of the chiseled owl and fit a torch there. The same torch work also to enlighten the pumpkin once finished.<\/p>\n

    Step 6: fit a torchlight at the back, to illuminate the chiseled design<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

    Once done with the carving (good luck with cleaning up that mess<\/strong>!), the finished product might not look so appealing…<\/p>\n
