After days of work in his studio in <strong>Tours<\/strong>, western France, the miniatures he composed through tiny, almost imperceptible brushstrokes, came to resemble the magnificent early Renaissance paintings he had admired in <strong>northern Italy <\/strong>and which he himself had completed for <strong>Louis XI<\/strong>, <strong>Charles VIII<\/strong>, and <strong>Louis XII<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Schermata-2019-10-09-alle-12.28.49.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Schermata-2019-10-09-alle-12.47.32-1.png\" alt=\"Detail of the Bri\u00e7onnet Book of Hours (fol.70r.)\" class=\"wp-image-7579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Schermata-2019-10-09-alle-12.47.32-1.png 500w, https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Schermata-2019-10-09-alle-12.47.32-1-300x450.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With its exceptionally radiant colors, richness of detail, and masterly use of perspective, the Bri\u00e7onnet Heures dazzles viewers even today for being <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/facsimiles\/briconnet-book-of-hours-facsimile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a collection of exquisite Renaissance paintings in book-form (opens in a new tab)\">a collection of exquisite Renaissance paintings in book-form<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commissioned by the powerful bishop <strong>Guillaume Bri\u00e7onnet<\/strong> in the late 15th century, Poyer&#8217;s masterpiece represents a <strong>novelty in the tradition of Books of Hours<\/strong> due to the full-page miniatures he dedicated even to secondary portions of text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Illustrations in the majestic prayer book are reminiscent of artworks by the Italians <strong>Giovanni Bellini<\/strong>, <strong>Andrea Mantegna<\/strong>, and illumination master <strong>Jean Fouquet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Scholars have compared Jean Poyer&#8217;s works to those of <strong>Jean Fouquet<\/strong>, <strong>Rogier van der Weyden<\/strong>,<strong> Leonardo da Vinci<\/strong>, and <strong>Michelangelo<\/strong>.<\/p><p><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The main parts, such as the Office of the Virgin, St John Passion, Penitential Psalms, and an Office of the Dead, begin with <strong>stunning double-page miniatures <\/strong>set in the most beautiful <strong>Renaissance architectural settings<\/strong>, with elaborate <strong>hats and garments<\/strong> traditionally worn at the courts Jean Poyer was acquainted with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/briconnet-book-of-hours-facsimile-edition-01-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/briconnet-book-of-hours-facsimile-edition-01-2-750x500.jpg\" alt=\"Detail of the Bri\u00e7onnet Book of Hours (fols. 69v.-70r.)\" class=\"wp-image-7580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/briconnet-book-of-hours-facsimile-edition-01-2-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/briconnet-book-of-hours-facsimile-edition-01-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/briconnet-book-of-hours-facsimile-edition-01-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/briconnet-book-of-hours-facsimile-edition-01-2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Folios 69v. and 70r. of the <strong>Penitential Psalms <\/strong>section, showing David&#8217;s anointment and repentance, are stunning for their portrayal of depth and attention to detail, both in the<strong> imposing church interior <\/strong>and in the <strong>breathtaking view<\/strong> on Renaissance buildings and hilly landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every single pigment is a testament to Poyer&#8217;s <strong>mastery of perspective <\/strong>and use of colors, as well as his ability to convey the <strong>intense expressiveness<\/strong> of every character. In the background of fol. 11v. a <strong>gondolier<\/strong> is seen drifting through the waves of the canal in the shadow of a wooden bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Schermata-2019-10-09-alle-12.49.25.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Schermata-2019-10-09-alle-12.49.25-1.png\" alt=\"Detail of the Bri\u00e7onnet Book of Hours (fol.83r)\" class=\"wp-image-7582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Schermata-2019-10-09-alle-12.49.25-1.png 500w, https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Schermata-2019-10-09-alle-12.49.25-1-300x450.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But the city Poyer was best acquainted with was <strong>Tours<\/strong>, the capital of France in the 1460s and 1470s, used as a <strong>permanent residence<\/strong> by the kings and court. In this charming town, <strong>half-timbered houses<\/strong>, with their wooden frames, adjoin the <strong>stone fa\u00e7ades <\/strong>of Renaissance mansions. The view, which visitors can still enjoy in one of the city center&#8217;s caf\u00e9s, served as a background for the <strong>Raising of Lazarus<\/strong> on fol. 83r. The miniature is an example of Poyer&#8217;s masterful use of color, both for the <strong>intensity of pigments<\/strong> and the <strong>contrast<\/strong> among them: the shiny red boots, the bright sapphire trousers, the vibrant green undergarment, and the crimson tunic are all outshined by the light radiating from the gold yellow turban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>This is just one of the amazing new manuscript facsimiles we discovered at the latest <strong>Frankfurt Book Fair<\/strong>.
