Between about 1470 and 1560, <span class=\"em\"><strong>Flemish manuscripts<\/strong>&#8216; painters created, on the pages of <strong>illuminated books<\/strong>, some of the most stunning works of art of the <strong>Renaissance<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-805 aligncenter\" title=\"Book of Hours of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, Facsimile edition\" alt=\"Book of Hours of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, Facsimile edition\" src=\"http:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/thumb_1000_600_102_06-e1382696371946.jpg\" width=\"370\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/thumb_1000_600_102_06-e1382696371946.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/thumb_1000_600_102_06-e1382696371946-226x300.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Kren<\/strong> and <strong>Scot McKendrick<\/strong>, in the introduction of <em>Illuminating the Renaissance:<\/em> <em>The Triumph of Flemish Manuscript Painting in Europe<\/em>, say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>During this period <strong>manuscript illuminators<\/strong> radically transformed the appearance of the illustrated page. First, <span class=\"em\">they introduces into their miniatures the mastery of light, texture, and space<\/span> that <strong>Jan van Eyck<\/strong> (1390- 1441) and <strong>Rogier van der Weyden<\/strong> (ca. 1400-1464) had achieved in their <strong>devotional images<\/strong>, <strong>altarpieces<\/strong>, and <strong>portraits<\/strong> painted in oil on panel. Indeed, the finest of the new generation of illuminators rivaled the painters in the expressiveness and subtely of their best miniatures. Second, the decorated border of the page, the area that surrounds a painted image or text, grew comparable in its richness to the miniature it framed. Superseding the two dimensional border concept of the past, the faming flora and fauna were more three-dimensional and closer to actual size. <span class=\"em\">Flowers and insects cast their own painted shadows, teasing the eye with their apparent veracity<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flemish manuscripts&#8217; painters created some of the most
