Here, in the year 698, Bishop Willibrord (658-739) founded the imposing abbey which today houses his remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Initials decorated with a red border alternate with pictorial ones, sometimes in gold or silver, giving a total of <strong>over five hundred<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the abbacy of <strong>Humbert<\/strong>, which began in 1028, the coenoby reached the height of its splendor, especially as regards the <em>scriptorium<\/em>, the largest of its kind during the Salian Dynasty. Headings, <em>incipit <\/em>and <em>explicit <\/em>are in <strong>Roman square capitals<\/strong>, with a few <strong>uncial elements<\/strong>, and <strong>rustic capitals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/codex-aureus-echternach-facsimile-edition-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"319\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/codex-aureus-echternach-facsimile-edition-10-750x319.jpg\" alt=\"Detail of the Codex Aureus of Echternach\" class=\"wp-image-6611\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/codex-aureus-echternach-facsimile-edition-10-750x319.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/codex-aureus-echternach-facsimile-edition-10-300x128.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/codex-aureus-echternach-facsimile-edition-10-768x326.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.facsimilefinder.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/codex-aureus-echternach-facsimile-edition-10.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The manuscript remained at Echternach abbey until the end of the 19th century, when it was transferred to the Benedictine monastery of Petersberg at <strong>Erfurt<\/strong>.
