Just like David beat\u00a0Goliath,\u00a0Silo\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a publisher based in Burgos, Spain \u2013 won the battle of the decade: after a 10-year appeal, the Spanish publisher was granted not only access to the manuscript \u2013 safely locked in the vault of Yale\u2019s Beinecke Library<\/strong> –\u00a0but also permission to create 898 facsimile replicas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Due to its cryptic\u00a0text, the\u00a0Voynich manuscript<\/strong>\u00a0is justly considered one of the most\u00a0mysterious texts<\/strong>\u00a0defying translation, and public opinion has certainly taken contrasting stands on its non-legibility.\u00a0Some have taken this obscurity to mean genius, many others have seen “crazy” in it.<\/p>\n

What do We Know about the Voynich Manuscript?<\/h2>\n

Just like the rest of the world, we are pretty clueless on the contents of the text, however, we created a codicology<\/strong>\u00a0and description based on the accepted knowledge of the Voynich manuscript<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The manuscript is named after Wilfrid Voynich<\/strong> and, for a long time it\u00a0was believed to be the work of\u00a0Francis Bacon<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

So, let’s stick to what we know: the manuscript is named after\u00a0Wilfrid Voynich<\/strong>\u00a0who bought it from the Jesuit\u00a0Collegium Romanum<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a01912<\/strong>; for a long time the manuscript was believed to be the work of\u00a0Francis Bacon<\/strong>; and finally, no one seems to have made any headway in discovering the meaning of the illustrations, and of course, of the text.<\/p>\n

What is a High Quality Facsimile?<\/h2>\n

I often hear facsimiles importance being played down, possibly\u00a0because there\u2019s a bit of confusion on the term itself. The word “facsimile<\/strong>” comes from\u00a0Latin<\/strong>\u00a0“fac” and “simile” meaning “make it alike” or “made it alike”. Unfortunately, more often than not the word is used loosely – even in library catalogs – to describe an art book with photographic representations of a manuscript (not a facsimile, at all).<\/p>\n

<\/span>A facsimile is noticeably different from an art book, and not just for the quality of the printed images<\/span><\/div>\n

So, what is a\u00a0facsimile edition? Well, it is a reproduction of a book – usually a\u00a0rare manuscript<\/strong>\u00a0– retaining\u00a0the original’s\u00a0physicality <\/strong>(intrinsic and extrinsic criteria); this means that the copy\u00a0aims to resemble the original manuscript in every detail, from the majestic illustrations and beautiful binding to the not-so-majestic details such as holes, creased pages, page feel, water stains and so on.<\/p>\n

Why does it Take so Long to Make the Voynich Facsimile Edition?<\/h2>\n

Now that we’ve gotten the\u00a0definition out the way, we can go back to the\u00a018-month<\/strong>\u00a0making-process<\/strong>.\u00a0Time-wise, 18 months is a long time, however the process of facsimile-making is tortuous and composed of several tricky stages: photo session, pre-press session, printing, and binding.<\/p>\n

So, the first time-consuming part of creating an excellent facsimile is being good at\u00a0color proofing<\/strong>\u00a0which affects most of the remaining\u00a0production stages<\/strong>.\u00a0Then, the right paper must be chosen to be as close as possible to the parchment of the manuscript, and this is no easy task.\u00a0Once printed, the pages must be trimmed to the size and shape of the original manuscript: the\u00a0Voynich manuscript<\/strong>\u00a0poses a couple of additional problems due to the\u00a0fold-outs<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0irregular folios<\/strong>.\u00a0Finally, binding: a good facsimile replicates the quires and structure of the binding of original manuscript.\u00a0High quality facsimiles<\/strong>\u00a0are hand-bound in traditional binding workshops. Enough said?<\/p>\n

Do We Need a Facsimile Edition of the Voynich Manuscript?<\/h2>\n

At the risk of sounding dull, I would claim the obvious: we do because there isn’t a proper facsimile of the Voynich manuscript yet.\u00a0A quick search on\u00a0Google<\/strong>\u00a0for \u201cVoynich manuscript facsimile<\/strong>\u201d shows a number of alleged facsimiles:<\/p>\n

1) on\u00a0Amazon<\/strong>, we find something that seems a print-on-demand book<\/a>. Probably, a low quality print-out of the images of the\u00a0Beinecke website<\/strong>;<\/p>\n

2) the recently announced\u00a0Yale<\/strong>\u00a0book<\/a> which I assume will be a great scholarly publication, with good quality images but definitely\u00a0not an item\u00a0that in a library catalog would – should, rather – be defined as “facsimile”;<\/p>\n

3) the\u00a0Ambush Printing<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cfacsimile\u201d<\/a> which is nothing more than an average-to-low quality print-out<\/strong> of the Beinecke images, bound in a pleasant, hand-made leather binding not even remotely close to the Voynich<\/strong>\u00a0manuscript original binding.<\/p>\n

The list is long and there are several other Voynich \u201cfacsimiles-wannabes\u201d out there but, honestly, I wouldn\u2019t call any of them \u201cfacsimile\u201d. They\u2019re art books, nice and informative, but that’s it.<\/p>\n

Raymond Clemens<\/strong>, curator at the Beinecke library, said Yale finally agreed\u00a0to have facsimiles done to satisfy\u00a0the many people who ask\u00a0to consult the\u00a0Voynich manuscript<\/strong>. In terms of educational purposes<\/strong>, the facsimile edition will be used outside of the library\u00a0to be shown to students or anyone who might be interested, avoiding the dangerous handling of the fragile original.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the past few days the big news has allowed public opinion to make its mind about this facsimile edition considering the\u00a0Voynich facsimile edition<\/strong>\u00a0not-so-accessible pricing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Why not settle for digital images and scholarly edition, with\u00a0\u20ac7,000<\/strong>\u00a0–\u00a0\u20ac8,000<\/strong>\u00a0still\u00a0in our pockets?<\/span><\/div>\n

Despite the\u00a0general belief\u00a0that\u00a0a high quality facsimile is achievable by \u201cdownloading the images and printing them out\u201d at home, which hopefully\u00a0you\u00a0will be deterred to think from now on, another question remains open: why not settle for digital images and scholarly edition, with\u00a0\u20ac7,000<\/strong>\u00a0–\u00a0\u20ac8,000<\/strong>\u00a0still\u00a0in our pockets?<\/p>\n

Well, if you wanted to take on the challenge of deciphering\u00a0the\u00a0Voynich<\/strong>\u00a0code you may as well use the\u00a0digital images<\/strong>; if you needed to give a look at some images of the manuscript for personal or scholarly interest you would be happy with a regular book along with the digital images available online.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0if\u00a0you wanted to experience yourself the sense and the thrill of handling the\u00a0Voynich manuscript<\/strong>, well, the high-end facsimile would be\u00a0the way to go.<\/p>\n

In terms of\u00a0educational purposes<\/strong>, facsimiles represent\u00a0the easiest and most direct way to show meaningful samples of the history of the book<\/strong> to students. High quality facsimiles can give an idea of the physicality of the object \u201cbook\u201d in its historical development and are probably the closest thing to the original.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The Voynich manuscript<\/strong> is so appealing to buyers because of its mystery and its enduring\u00a0any attempt of\u00a0translation<\/span><\/div>\n

Does the\u00a0first-hand experience<\/strong>, the expensive material, and the long making process justify the announced price? We’ll let you decide: however, considering the private collectors market,\u00a0which makes the largest audience for such editions, the cost is probably decent.<\/p>\n

From a\u00a0business-oriented<\/strong>\u00a0point of view, it would not be fair to point our finger at the publisher for applying the law of supply and demand (without which any business would basically fail), thus leading to increase of price when there\u2019s an increase of demand. The price is probably justified also by its mainstream resonance<\/strong>\u00a0– it’s not everyday that a facsimile edition makes it to the first page of the news!<\/p>\n

<\/span>Will you be the one cracking the code?<\/span><\/div>\n

In the world of facsimile making, we can safely claim that Silo\u00e9\u00a0hit the jackpot<\/strong>.\u00a0What makes the\u00a0Voynich manuscript<\/strong>\u00a0so extraordinary\u00a0is its\u00a0mystery<\/strong>\u00a0and its defying\u00a0any attempt of translation, making it so appealing to buyers.\u00a0Ironically, the facsimile edition\u00a0could lose its value if ever deciphered.<\/p>\n

Ultimately,\u00a0the\u00a0Voynich<\/strong>\u00a0manuscript<\/strong>\u00a0continues to be a worldwide attraction.
