After disastrously failing his French class, George was told he had no capacity to ever learn a living language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Florence, 1994, George Cochrane at His Studio, when he first met Dante Alighieri<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Placing George in Latin class and hoping for the best, his teachers couldn\u2019t have possibly imagined the results.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

A few years later, George took up Italian and Spanish, and using Latin as his baseline,<\/strong> he began to overcome his supposed handicap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting Dante<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Amidst this life changing experience, George met Dante Alighieri<\/strong> for the very first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his junior year abroad in Florence, Italy, George purchased his first copy of Dante\u2019s Divine Comedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While sensing the greatness of the Divine Comedy, George had a hard time understanding the depth of its immortal message.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAn artistic vision took hold: to make a new illuminated manuscript using his comic font and illustrations<\/strong>, a version of the Divine Comedy that would make Dante’s poem contemporary through art, and his message approachable to younger generations.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Flame That Wouldn\u2019t Go Out<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It seemed hopeless, but Dante kept re-entering George\u2019s life like a flame<\/strong> that wouldn\u2019t go out, and George was drawn to that flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During research on his graphic novel about Homer\u2019s Odyssey, George began reading literary critic James Joyce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Joyce swore that Dante was a greater writer than Shakespeare himself. Impossible!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having been trained that Shakespeare\u2019s work was the epitome of sophistication and complexity of language, George was perplexed, and decided to give Dante another try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything happened in paint for me\u201d<\/strong>, says Cochrane. Drawing was an afterthought at first. With the graphic novel and illuminated manuscript<\/strong>, he\u2019s challenging himself to do everything he has doubts about as an artist. Finding his current copy impossible to read,<\/strong> George sought out a number of different copies to compare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he delved deeper into the world of Dante, he quickly fell in love.<\/strong> His new obsession led him to develop an idea for a chapter in his graphic novel<\/strong>, where Dante leads him around his own high school the way Virgil leads him around the Inferno<\/strong>, and where George got to settle some old scores just like Dante settles some old scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to achieve this, he needed to study Dante – REALLY study Dante.<\/strong> All of the obstacles he had overcome had brought him to this very moment, and he was ready for the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

700 Years of Art Celebrating Dante<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Not long after this moment, George learned that 2021 would be the 700th anniversary of Dante\u2019s death.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An artistic vision took hold: to make a new illuminated manuscript using his comic font and illustrations,<\/strong> a version of the Divine Comedy that would make Dante’s poem contemporary through art, and his message approachable to younger generations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

George ended his journey on the Odyssey graphic novel and fully committed himself to the path of Dante. To this day, after 7 years of tireless work<\/strong>, he continues on this path, still striving to fulfill his dream of creating a new and complete Divine Comedy manuscript by 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on 700 years of art, from illuminated manuscripts, to Botticelli and Dor\u00e9, the manuscript is entirely penned and illustrated in graphic novel style by George himself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make even more accessible for today\u2019s readers, an English version will be produced alongside the original Italian.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
