The Mondsee-Vienna Song Manuscript comprises a late fourteenth-century collection of songs with their melodies, perhaps copied at Salzburg (fols. 166-252). Another collection, without melodies, of twelve German-language songs was added to that core for the goldsmith Peter Spörl in Salzburg and dated 1472 (fols. 253-284). The earlier portion contains thirty-one sacred Christian songs and fifty-seven secular pieces, all in German. Among the composers represented are the "Monk of Salzburg," Hermann von Mügeln, Albrecht Lesch, and Peter von Arberg. The notation is on four- and five-line staves. Bulbous Lombard majuscule letters in red signal the beginnings of verses.
