The Roman Alphabet is a manuscript created by Italian calligrapher, artist, and alchemist Felice Feliciano around 1460, perhaps in Verona. It comprises hand-colored letters of the Latin alphabet formed into Square Capitals using rules of geometry and the subdivision of a square into four parts. Printed in 1463, Feliciano's designs would have a profound impact on the type used by Italian printers. Each calligraphed letter is accompanied by a short epigram in Italian written in red ink. The letters are followed by recipes for colored ink and a poem in Latin by Paolo Ramusio.
